“Oh! It was a trip of a lifetime!” We hear it all too often these days.
The challenge is that phrase means something different to various people. In today’s society, most times it is translated as the three “E’s”: Extravagant, Expensive, and Exotic.
Make no mistake, I like the big trips too. But, aren’t our lives made of memories; not necessarily destinations? What if we redefined our expectations to be more about what we experienced, and with whom, instead of how many miles away we traveled?
I conducted an informal Facebook poll of some of my friends and asked them why they travel. The answers came back in three general categories.
- Adventure.
- Escape.
- Experience and see new things.
So. While we could absolutely find all of those things on one of those cruises I love to occasionally take (more about that another time), we can also find them nearby.
What if you decided to take your book, hand work, or your journal to an outdoor café in a different part of town, or even in the next closest town? Sip a little latte, enjoy the beautiful weather, and just watch people who have nothing to do with your day-to-day life.
Listen to the different sounds. Breathe the smell of the freshly baked goods. Feel the smooth cup in your hand and the sun on your skin.
Adventure? Check. Some place new.
Escape? Check. Nobody around you know, and you’ve disconnected from the phone, and e-mail, and social media. Ahhhhhh.
Experience and see new things? Check. Who knows? Maybe you’ve never sprinkled cinnamon on that latte, and today was the day to try it?
Time requirement? Well, that’s completely up to you.
Budget? That could be as little as $5.
Who knows? This just may end up being one of your “trips of a lifetime.”
